Why I love Matta's: customers stories

Just after the birth of our 5th child we had a "Matta's Night Out". By the time we finished eating our 4th son had fallen asleep on the floor. We picked up the baby in the carrier to leave and headed out to the car. When we got everyone buckled in we realized we had left son #4 asleep on the floor. We went back in to get him and the people at the next table were laughing. They had placed bets as to whether we'd realize we left our son before we left the parking lot or after we got home. Luckily it was before we left. It was very funny. We have passed our love of Matta's on to our children. At the moment we all go to the place on Higley. We are looking forward to the new one.  I also have an aunt that lives in Washington D.C. Everytime she comes to town she heads straight to Matta's. She would always by something to have for breakfast the next morning.  We wish you the best!

My family and I have eaten in almost every mexican place around and can not find food that compares to Mattas I have loved the chile relleno's since I worked there in 1964.

I would like to tell you why I love Matta's! My family and I have been eating at Matta's since it opened. I even remember going to a smaller place right across the street from your location on main street! My siblings and I have grown up eating your food, your restaurant got me through my childhood, teenage years and I even had my wedding reception/dinner there (june 25, 1995)! I honestly was so sad when the Main st. restaurant closed! We looked forward to going for date nights, family nights and even to celebrate birthdays/anniversarys!  Matta's has brought us many wonderful memories! During all three of my pregnancys I HAD to eat at Mattas at least once a week! I craved it!  I've always ordered the SAME THING...two crisp ground beef tacos w/ a LARGE side of sour cream, beans and rice on the side. My mom loves your chilie rellanos, so I tried a bite once...sometimes I order those, but still my two tacos etc, too!  Funny, my sister and all 3 of my girls eat the same thing as I do, EVERYTIME! We love going to Matta's Grill, but it's quite a drive from our chandler home. We are VERY excited for the new location to open! We love having the blog to follow and hope to celebrate Valentine's Day at your new location! Thank you for always having such good quality food and WONDERFUL service! Your staff has always been so awesome! We look forward to the new restaurant opening and can't wait to add Matta's to our weekly routine again!!! Thanks for letting me share my story!

I am no medical doctor but Matta’s was always the cure all for me. Needless to say we all were raised on good old fashioned Matta’s. You could say I was a 3rd generation Mattas addict.  One of my best Mattas memories…I used to stay home from school with an upset stomach and my grandfather would call me to see if I needed anything. I remember asking him for Matta’s 2 days in a row because it would make me feel better. He went and picked me up a number 6 and chips and salsa both days. I don’t know why, but Mattas could always make me feel better.  He  would come at least twice a week and get 2 #10’s, a #6, a Quart of Hot and Mild, and a big bag of chips.. That was always our order. They used to recognize his voice and called him the man in the hat because he always wore a tan hat with a stripe around it.
I moved to Glendale when I was 12 years old and my very first job was purely to fund my Mattas addiction. I would drive to Mesa 2 or 3 times a week and I always got food to go so I could take it to my grandparents (who were now in their late 80’s). The very last time I saw my grandfather I brought him his #10. I remember him sitting in his chair eating it and I thought, it was so nice that I could finally pay them back for all of the Matta’s they got me. Mattas is not only a restaurant but it brings back the feelings that I had when my whole family would sit in the party room at Mattas for every birthday or any other excuse we could make up to get together and eat Mattas.
Thank you for everything,
Sincerely,
Amy

My family have been dining at Matta's since before I can remember. For years, and to a certain degree still to this day, feel that if you want a genuine Mexican Food dining experience, Matta's is the only Restaurant this side of the border. As a child I really liked the fact that when you ordered a soda, you got the entire bottle, not just a glass of ice with a splash of soda that if your lucky might equal a couple of swallows. I have never once, in the 50 years of spoiling my taste buds at Matta's, left that restaurant without being totally satisfied. In fact, I am usually so overly satisfied I usually walk out holding my stomache. The food there tastes so great I loose all self control and end up over endulging (making a total pig of myself)to the point of our family, over all the years, joking about ordering a crane or rolling each other home! I am glad I found this website and getting the opportunity to say THANK YOU FOR BEING A BIG PART OF MY LIFE! It is caring and dedicated families like like yours that has made growing up in Mesa, AZ a memorable and great tasting life. Your Green Chile Rellenos are unmatched anywhere!

Matta's has always been a family tradition in our household. As long as I can remember we ate there for Mother's Day, Father's Day, birthdays, you name it. We soon became friends with everyone who worked there. It was like coming home. Now that I'm married to a military man, we don't live near Matta's, but every time we come home, we're there. Thank you for all of your amazingly delicious food, and the wonderful atmosphere you provided my entire childhood. To the only restaurant I could actually consider family (HAHA!), good luck in all of your new projects and hope (for our sake) that you are more than successful!!
The O'Donnals, Petries, and Bakers!

We love your place. We have been going to your place for years. You have the best Mexican Food we have ever tasted. We made a trip to the Reverview Mall to find you have not opened yet.  My husband has been going to your place since 1969.  We went every Friday night when your place was on Main Street.
Thanks Again

My family moved to Mesa in 1961, and I'm sure we ate at Matta's at least once a week from then until today! Mom used to pull my sister and me out of school at lunchtime for "allergy treatments" - nothing clears a stuffy nose like Matta's salsa! And my sis insisted on eating Matta's before delivering her 2 kids; she was having labor pains in the restaurant with her daughter. Her son arrived before we could go to Matta's so I picked up a chili relleno and took it to her at the hospital! And now the tradition continues: my niece had her baby in February 2010 and when we went to visit, she wanted us to bring her Matta's! The Grill is just up the street from me, but I'm looking forward to the new Cantina - it looks amazing! Can't imagine my life without my Matta's fix!

My father loved Matta's for years. He had been stopping by since the 50's. He died in 1999... I (we) visit Matta's from San Diego, Ca. Our friends live in Fountain Hills, AZ... they visit Matta's quite often. "Eat at Matta's... it's the best...even better than California's mexican food restaurants.

I love Matta's because I grew up eating it. Any time we had a "family moment" we would go to Matta's. Birthdays, Mother's Day & Father's day, and any other special occasions were spent at our favorite restaurant. This was a tradition was passed down from my mom's mom, who started taking her when she was 13, in 1959. The tacos (and especially the hot sauce) are about the only restaurant food that I actually get withdrawls for! Since the Main St location closed, Matta's Mexican Grill is the only restaurant that I will drive 30 minutes or more out of my way to get my dose of hot sauce. Thankfully, the new location in Riverview is under 10 minutes away from my house. WOOHOO!! GO MATTA'S!!

I love Matta's for several reason dont know where to start so this is not in any particular order.... I've been coming here since the late 1960's The food is remarkable with a rich history of family recipies passed down through the years giving Matta's a true classic mexican place to have lunch or dinner..with a friendly inviroment many of my family celebrations have been celebebrated right here...You get prompt service with a smile you will simply love Matta's a place you can count on the staff to deliver nothing but the freshest hot food right to your table... Hope you can take my word for it but if not come and try it for yourself... Thank you
Sincerely Bruce
